Sam Field's Bio

Growing up in Brockton, MA, Sam was the youngest member of a tempestuous lower-middle class family. Drawn to the materials and processes that have historically lived outside of an “Art” context, she strives to make work that can live in and speak to the different worlds of 'high' and 'low.' “I make--slowly--with/through craft. Making slowly is a personal act of resistance against the fastpaced, multi-tasking, product-driven world in which I find myself.” Sam received her MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and her undergraduate degree from Massachusetts College of Art; and is currently Lecturer of Sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts | Tufts University.

She has been supported by grants from Now + There Accelerator program, City of Boston's Transformative Public Art program, Fiber International, Puffin Foundation, St. Botolph Club, SMFA Traveling Scholars Fellowship, Massachusetts Cultural Council, International Fiber Collaborative, Artist Resource Trust, and through residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and Millay Colony, Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center and The Arts Industry program John Michael Kohler art Center.
