LaMontagne Gallery is pleased to present In Search Of, an exhibition of new works by Andrew Mowbray
In uncertain times we search for anything that provides us with understanding and insight of our current condition. In the exhibition, In Search Of, Andrew Mowbray creates objects of fortune and fate that he uses to predict the future and understand the present. Most of these works are based on implements used to conjure luck and supernatural powers. By creating his own devices of luck and chance, and interacting with them, Mowbray questions his own powers as an artist, and acknowledges the futility of belief in a system with unknown outcomes.
While Mowbray strives to transcend the unknown, the gravity of the gallery space and its relationship to the artist take hold. The works comprising In Search Of ultimately foretell both their own existence and their placement within the gallery. Mowbray acknowledges the absurdity of applying meaning to both art objects and fortunetelling implements. This struggle with belief in art is similar to Bruce Nauman’s early neon work that states, "The True Artist Helps the World by Revealing Mystic Truths".
Andrew Mowbray was born in Boston, MA (1971) and lives and works in Boston, MA. Mowbray received a BFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD (1995) and an MFA in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI (1998). Recently, Mowbray has shown at the Davis Museum in Wellesley, MA, and at the DeCordova Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA. He was also a finalist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council Award in Sculpture/ Installation.
