LaMontagne Gallery is pleased to present Containers, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Jeff Perrott.
Emerged from an impasse in Perrott’s Construction series, paintings become a container: a bound space in which forms relate to one another, the artist, and the viewer. The idea extends to the containers of the body, mind, and consciousness, as well as the social and technological structures that shape how we understand ourselves and others. While the earlier Construction paintings embrace complexity, uncertainty, and expansion beyond the picture plane, the Containers turn towards something more direct, personal, and intimate.
Containers follow a deliberate set of formal rules, including axonometric geometry, hard edges, opaque color, exposed raw canvas, and figures that remain entirely within the picture plane. Although geometrically precise, each composition develops intuitively. Its forms hunker down, reach, withdraw, or hover suggesting figures negotiating boundaries of their own containment.
Throughout this body of work, containment becomes the condition through which intimacy, love, and connection are made possible.
