LAMONTAGNE GALLERY is pleased to kick off 2008 with a new exhibition
of work by Holly Coulis coupled with Langdon Graves
in the project room opening January 5 and remains on view through
February 9. In addition to opening a new show, we are thrilled
to debut our new gallery location at 555 E. 2nd Street located in
South Boston.
In this new exhibition, Holly Coulis' new paintings continue to
explore the intersection of fictional landscape with characters.
Typically dreamers, her subjects are eccentrics and strangers caught
between the world they imagine and the awkward reality of class,
clothes, and body. These small disruptions in the picture are determined
through unexpected gaps that offer clues to the complexity of painting
intent. In the space between the plans and imperfections of Coulis'
paintings, the viewer can find humor and understanding that touches
on their own lives.
Holly Coulis received her BFA from the Ontario College of Art and
Design followed by her MFA in Painting from the School of Museum
of Fine Arts. Her work has been recently included in shows at Freight
+ Volume (NY), Derek Eller Gallery (NY) and Kinz, Tillou + Feigen
(NY). Solo exhibitions in the past include Cherry and Martin, Los
Angeles CA and also Groeflin Maag Galerie in Basel Switzerland and
Zach Feuer Gallery/ LFL.
In Langdon Graves' project room exhibition, Preparations, preparing
is an act of ushering and organizing the inevitable. This is illustrated
through sculptures set in particular arrangements alongside detailed
graphite drawings. Playful sculptures and drawings mounted on clean
plastic trays initially delight and with further inspection reveal
something unsettling. Tangles of hair-like textures, layered with
pristine white rubber caps and other recognizable objects become
a reflection of decay and renewal of the human mind and body. These
sculptures are an intimate look at measures we take to prevent,
slow or enhance the effects of mortality.
Brooklyn based artist, Langdon Graves received her MFA from Parsons
the New School for Design in May of 2007. Graves has recently exhibited
work in a solo show ADA Gallery in Richmond, VA in addition to group
shows at Rare Gallery (NY) and Parsons' MFA Thesis Exhibition curated
by Brian Sholis.
